How Do You Make Icons?

To make an icon in Windows 7, create a new image or open an existing one in Microsoft Paint, then save the file as a BMP image. Access the Folder Options settings window, make file extensions visible, and modify the BMP extension of the image file into an ICO extension.

  1. Create an image in Microsoft Paint

Click on the Start button and select the All Programs option. Click on the Accessories folder then click Paint. Use the drawing tools to create the image you want to use as an icon. To open an already created image, click on the blue File icon in the top left corner then click Open. Locate the image, click on it, and click Open again.

  2. Save the image as a BMP file

Once you finish creating your image, click on the blue File icon. Hover over the Save As option with your mouse pointer and select the option for BMP picture. Type in your chosen file name, and click on Save.

  3. Make file extensions visible

Click on Start, then select the Control Panel option. Click on the Appearance and Personalization link, and click on Folder Options. Select the View tab, uncheck the box next to the option labeled Hide extensions for known file types, and click OK.

  4. Modify the file extension

Navigate to the BMP file you created, right-click on it, and select the Rename option from the drop-down menu. Delete the BMP part of the file name, and type ICO in its place. Press Enter, then click Yes in the dialog box that pops up to confirm the change.
