The most common way to find a lost iPhone is by using Apple’s Find My iPhone feature. As long as the feature is set up before the phone is misplaced, users can locate their device using Apple’s iCloud service.
Users who have lost their iPhone first need to log in to Apple’s online iCloud service using their Apple ID and password. After logging in, clicking the “Find My iPhone” button on the main screen pulls up a map that displays the phone’s location with a green dot. The program typically takes a couple of minutes to adjust the GPS reading and display a more accurate location.
A lost iPhone can only be located using GPS if the phone is still turned on and able to connect to a network. If the phone is dead or unable to connect, the Find My iPhone app displays the phone’s last known location. The GPS location may not always be precise, but it does indicate a one or two block area in which the phone can be found. The Find My Phone service also allows users to have their lost phone play a loud beeping noise, making it easier to find. Users can also lock their phone remotely with a four-digit password and have the phone display a message with contact information.
