LMS is short for learning management system and can refer to any application or technology that is used in the planning, assessment and implementation of a designated learning process. A typical LMS gives teachers a direct method to deliver relevant content to students.
LMS software may help instructors and teachers to monitor and assess student performance and participation in the class. On the student side, the software can provide an interactive environment that allows students to communicate through discussion threads, forums and video. As of 2014, the Advanced Distance Learning group sets specifications that encourage a standardized format for LMS development called the Shareable Content Object Reference Model.
