Find free and legal downloadable music for MP3 players through iTunes, Jamendo and Incompetech. Whereas Apple offers commercial music for free, Jamendo allows independent artists to share their music for free. Incompetech features free music by the artist Kevin MacLeod.
Apple offers free music downloads on iTunes through the Free on iTunes section of the application. Replacing the previous Single of the Week promotion program, Free on iTunes offers various music, TV series and movies for free. An Apple ID is necessary to use iTunes.
Jamendo allows artists from all over the world to publish their music under Creative Commons licences. Depending on the exact Creative Commons license, you may even be able to use songs in commercial projects. To see if the artist allows commercial use, open the individual information page of a song, and look under License. CC BY licenses allow you to use the song in commercial projects as long as you credit the artist. While you can listen to the music in an Internet browser without registering, a Jamendo account is necessary to download songs.
Incompetech only offers music licensed under the CC BY license. The website has a music library of over 2,000 pieces from a wide variety of genres including funk, hard electronic, lounge and classic rock. The website does not require an account to allow downloads.
