What Does "LAN" Stand For?

"LAN" stands for local area network. A local area network allows several computers that are close to each other to share files, printers, games or other application.

LANs are frequently found in offices, homes, schools and other locations where computer users need to communicate. A LAN may be either wired or wireless. A wired LAN is composed of ethernet cables, adapters and hubs. A wireless LAN connects computers via a wireless router. A LAN may connect to other LANs, the Internet, or to a wide area network (WAN). The smallest LAN has two computers while large LANs can contain thousands of computers.
