There are several ways a person can convert a .docx file into a document that can be opened and edited by older word-processing software. A person can use an online conversion service such as Zamzar, download a compatibility pack from Microsoft or use Apache OpenOffice.
Zamzar allows the user to upload a .docx file, select a desired format and have the converted file delivered to him via email. The Microsoft Office compatibility pack allows older versions of Microsoft Word (2000, XP and 2003) to open, edit and save .docx files that were created in Microsoft Word 2007 or newer versions. As of version 3.0, Apache OpenOffice offers Microsoft Office 2007 import filters that provide .docx reading and conversion functionality to the software.
