An IR blaster is a component that transmits infrared rays to communicate with televisions, DVD players, stereos and cable boxes. Mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets, use IR blasters to function like traditional TV remote controls.
Many mobile devices have built-in IR blasters, whereas external IR blasters are also available for devices without native support. Through mobile apps, IR blasters introduce capabilities beyond the normal functions of a TV remote control. These include automatically switching control between devices depending on the user's room location, simultaneously controlling multiple devices and giving show recommendations based on the user's preferences. Smart TVs also take advantage of IR blasters to enhance the viewing experience.
