Bhatia and Smith created Hotmail on July 4, 1996, while living in Mountain View, Calif. Before selling Hotmail to Microsoft, Bhatia was offered $160 million for the company by Bill Gates. In 2011, Hotmail serviced over 360 million users around the world and gave users the option of over 36 different languages on the website.
