Autodesk's Homestyler, HomeByMe, and Smartdraw Free are several software packages that allow you to plan and design interior spaces. Some of these require installation on a computer, while Homestyler and HomeByMe run directly from a browser window.
Autodesk is a developer of industry-standard 3-D design software packages used in architecture and engineering. Unlike some of Autodesk's complex professional applications, Homestyler is very user-friendly and runs directly in your browser. You can recreate your interior spaces simply by dragging and dropping elements such as walls, windows, doors and furniture. Its library features over 10,000 objects that you can use to instantly imagine and visualize any interior space. The designed interiors appear as either 2-D floor plan blueprints or as 3-D renderings.
HomeByMe is capable of drafting both 2-D and 3-D interior plans. It has a very intuitive user interface for designing interior spaces in three-dimensional renderings. It even lets you simulate the change in lighting conditions, giving you a realistic idea of how much sunlight fills a potential living space throughout the day.
SmartDraw requires the installation of its software package, which is available for both OS X and Windows operating systems. While it is also based on an intuitive interface, there is a steeper learning curve to its more advanced features. It offers professional capabilities such as drafting elevation plans, and also works for a variety of other purposes, such as creating diagrams and flow charts.
