What Is an Ignition Switch Wiring Diagram?

An ignition switch wiring diagram provides the schematics that are needed to enable auto owners to fix any wiring repairs related to their ignition system. Wiring diagrams are also available for the entire wiring system of Fords and Chevys and other foreign and American made cars. Diagram symbols include icons for the battery, fuses, lighting, motor, resistors, fusible links, horn and switches of a car.

An automotive wiring diagram, whether it is created for a specific system or the overall car itself, is a guide that shows how the wiring works and operates for a specific make and model of vehicle. All detailed components are featured as well as the locations and colors of wiring. Individual functions of circuits are shown so wiring connections can be defined for the purpose of testing.

Testing a wiring system can occur in different modes. For example, wiring can be tested with the key off, with the key on and engine off, defined as KOEO, or with the key on and engine running, referred to as KOER. Different modes will provide different readings as the wiring that is utilized is in various states of load.

When reading and studying a wiring diagram, whether it covers a single component or an entire system, look for specific items, such as the ground sources and power, and learn how to track the circuitry and wiring via their pathways and colors. Doing so will save time and lessen any confusion when a circuit, wire or sensor needs to be replaced.
