The Perfection V800, Perfection V550 Photo Color and Perfection V19 by Epson are highly-rated slide scanners according to experts. PCMag rates all three printers at or above four out of five stars. All three are flatbed scanners that use USB to connect to a computer.
Able to scan at up to 6400 by 9600 pixels resolution, the Perfection V800 has an optical density of 4.0 Dmax. It can scan a line in full color in 12.3 milliseconds, has a color bit depth of 48-bits per pixel and can scan slides up to 8.5 by 11.7 inches in size. Epson claims 100,000 mean cycles between failures for the V800.
Also capable of scanning at 6400 by 9600 pixels, the Perfection V550 takes 21 milliseconds to scan a line in full color. It has an optical density of 3.4 Dmax and a color bit depth of 48-bits per pixel. The scanner has four customizable buttons that scan, copy, email and scan as PDF. It can scan up to 30,000 times before failure.
The Perfection V19 can scan up to 4800 by 4800 pixels and has a color bit depth of 48-bits per pixels. The scanner takes about 30 seconds to scan a colored document in 600 dpi, and it has a maximum scan area of 8.5 by 11.7 inches.
All three scanners are compatible with both Windows and Mac OS X systems. Windows XP versions SP 2 and up and Mac OS X versions 10.6.x and up are required. PCMag claims that the scanners are less likely to damage photos due to the flatbed scanning areas. Likewise, all three can handle reflective documents, slides and pictures.
