Hair color changing apps allow users to upload photographs and change the appearance of their hair color. Hair color apps are examples of virtual try-on tools and, in some instances, augmented reality.
Hair color apps can be purchased or downloaded for free for iOS devices, icluding the iPhone and iPad, or Android smartphones. Hair Color Booth Free, Beautify Free-Hair Colorizer and Hairstyle Makeover are popular apps for iOS that target women, while Barbershop and Men's Hairstyles are apps that are geared toward male users. Typically, these products allow users to take personal photos, often called "selfies," or import them from a photo library and alter the photos to preview different hair colors.
Makeup Genius is an app by L'Oréal Paris that uses augmented reality technologies to provide instantaneous feedback to users who wish to view themselves wearing different hair colors and makeup. This product enables users to view a real-time video display with options to overlay different hairstyles. The image display then takes into account the texture and three-dimensional characteristics of the subject to render a realistic alteration to hair color or makeup. As of 2014, Makeup Genius is available for the iPhone and iPad, while the Android version is slated for release before 2015.
