The three most popular apps for finding movie listings are Fandango, Flixster and IMDb, according to Lifehacker, The New York Times and PCMag. All three are available for free on both Android and iOS.
Details on movie showtimes for different theaters, critics and moviegoers' reviews and other similar information are built into the core functionality of each of these three apps. Similarities aside, however, each of these apps boasts a particular strong suit that appeals to individual moviegoers differently. Fandango's forte lies in its ability to book tickets to thousands of movie theaters, as well as its Go Now feature, which lists showtimes starting within the next hour at local theaters. Flixster's main draw, on the other hand, is its integration with other services such as Netflix for online availability, Rotten Tomatoes for reviews and Yelp for restaurant locations near theaters. IMDb excels at providing tons of additional information about different movies and TV shows, including actor biographies and trivia.
As far as ratings for the apps go, critics are divided between the three. The iPhone versions of IMDb and Flixster are both on the PCMag Editor's Choice list, with IMDb edging Flixster out by half a point, whereas Flixster is Lifehacker's number one showtime app for the iPhone and Fandango its top choice for Android.
