To gift an app in iOS, head to the app's page in the Apple App Store, tap the Share icon and tap the Gift icon. The device may ask for Apple ID credentials at this point. In the Send Gift form, specify the recipient's email address, add a message and set a date to send the gift. Proceed to the next page to pay and confirm.

The Amazon Appstore for Android similarly sells gift cards that can be personalized and sent through email or Facebook.
