The Format Painter feature can copy the text and graphics formatting, such as borders and fills, to a different area within the same document. According to Microsoft, to use the Format Painter feature, the user should first highlight the text or graphic that has the formatting that he wants to copy, then press the Format Painter button on the Home tab. This causes the pointer to change to a paintbrush icon. The user then selects the other text or graphic where this formatting is desired. Pressing the ESC key stops the Format Painter function.
