According to Facebook, "following" describes a social media relationship that determines the information that generates on a person's news feed. Following occurs when one becomes friends with another individual on Facebook and when one manually chooses to follow a celebrity or politician in order to see his status updates.
Facebook allows users to follow as many or as few people as they wish. To determine the content displayed on their news feeds, users can choose to follow or not follow friends and famous people. Since the friends of a user are automatically followed upon Facebook friendship, users must manually change the settings in order to prevent those status updates from appearing on their news feed.
