There are a number of applications that can be used in flower identification. Some of these applications serve as electronic field guides, allowing users to access images and descriptions of flowers for the purposes of comparison. Other applications allow users to upload images for identification purposes.
Audubon Wildflowers offers access to digital information about more than 1,600 wildflowers in North America. FlowerPedia also works as a digital guide and allows users to search for flowers by country or state.
For a small fee, Flower Checker allows users to submit photos of a flower to a panel of botanical experts, who will try to identify the plant. While still in development, Leafsnap is a free application that employs visual recognition software to determine tree species, including flowering trees.
