How Do You Fix a Slow Computer?

To fix a slow computer, vacuum the hardware, remove old programs, run Disk Cleanup, defragment the hard drives, upgrade the RAM and use an external hard drive. This can be an easy or difficult process, depending on the problem.

  1. Vacuum the computer

Too much dust can cause the computer's temperature to rise, which slows it down. Turn off the computer, unplug it and wait 30 minutes. Set the vacuum on its lowest setting, and remove as much dust as possible.

  2. Remove unused programs

Click Start, then go to Control Panel. Click Programs and Features, and select and remove programs you no longer require. This frees up space and resources.

  3. Run Disk Cleanup

Click Start, then click All Programs. Go to Accessories, then System Tools and then Disk Cleanup. Follow the prompts to clean the disk.

  4. Defragment the hard drive

Click My Computer, then click Properties. Click the Tools tab, then click Defragment Now. This consolidates unused pieces of data that slow the computer.

  5. Upgrade the RAM

A sufficient amount of RAM is essential for multitasking. Buy additional RAM, and install it according to the manufacturer's directions.

  6. Use an external hard drive

If your hard drives are storing too much data, your computer may run slow. Buy an external drive, and transfer some of your data to it. Be sure to back up anything important.
