Microsoft's support page for its Excel spreadsheet application offers free training courses, videos and tutorials for beginners. As of 2015, tutorials for the 2013, 2010 and mobile versions of Excel are available.
Beginner topics for Excel include learning how to use formulas and functions to calculate and manipulate data. In addition, users can learn how to create a visual representation of the data and emphasize specific information through charts and graphs. Microsoft's tutorials further teach users how to refer to specific data via their cell references. Tips and hints are available that show the fastest way to enter and manipulate repetitive information to save time.
Once beginners grasp the basic Excel tasks, they can proceed to intermediate and advanced lessons. Intermediate lessons include handling time-related information, inserting headers and footers, sorting and filtering data and using conditional functions to compute numbers when certain criteria are met. Advanced lessons include learning how to use drop-down lists, creating PivotTables for data reporting and analysis, protecting confidential information with a password and using macros to record and automate repetitive actions.
Available courses for the mobile version of Excel offer a similar set of lessons. However, users learn how to interact with Excel through touch input instead of a mouse and keyboard.
