In a smartphone camera, resolution plays an important part in image quality, as it determines the sharpness of the image, which in turn determines how well fine details are represented. However, resolution is only one aspect of the overall image quality. Another aspect is the image sensor. The image sensor captures the light and forms the image that is represented in pixels.
The horizontal number of pixels multiplied by the vertical number yields the effective megapixels of the image. Generally, if the size of the image sensor is large enough, the images produced are good. If the image sensor is too small, the images can be poor. In some cameras, many pixels are formed from a small image sensor, resulting in poor images despite the high resolution. In other cameras, interpolation is used to increase the image resolution by creating new pixels in between the original pixels.
