It is possible to edit movies from a video camera for free with programs such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, which are native to the OSX and Windows environments, respectively. It is also possible to upload a video to YouTube and edit it there.
To edit a raw digital movie with iMovie, open the program, create a new project and choose from the available list of themes, which add titles and transitions to the project. You can also create a project without a theme. Next, import the raw movie files by clicking on the Add Media button. The program features tools for cutting the footage and rearranging it across the project, adding different types of transitions and titles to the clips, and exporting the file in the appropriate format.
Windows Movie Maker features a similar process in that it also offers users a selection of themes that feature specific transitions and title sequences. It also has tools for trimming and resizing movie clips, importing still photos and adding new music tracks. Publish the final movie by exporting it from the File menu.
To use the YouTube editor, upload the raw movie file to a YouTube account and click on the Editor tab. The site allows you to rearrange the clips, add additional clips and import separate audio tracks.
