Windows XP users can download free sound drivers by using the Device Manager. The Device Manager automatically finds the compatible driver for the specific sound card in the system and downloads it.
To open the Device Manager, click start and select Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, then System. Open Device Manager from the Hardware tab.
Once the Device Manager opens, expand the Sound, Video and Game Controllers list and find the sound card. Double click on the card, navigate to the Driver tab and click Update Driver.
For the Device Manager to download a driver, users must use an administrator account. To change user account settings, open the Control Panel and click User Accounts. After selecting an account, click Change My Account Type to enable or disable administrative rights for the account.
