Because Microsoft has discontinued its Works word processor, it is no longer possible to download the application. However, Microsoft still develops word processors. As of 2015, Office 265 is the latest version of Microsoft's office suit and includes a word processor called Microsoft Word. Moreover, Microsoft also offers a tool to help open Microsoft Works files in Office 365.
Office 365 comes with an advanced word processor called Microsoft Word. The application can add and edit headings, import images draw tables and modify document layout. It is available for numerous platforms, including Windows, Mac OS X, Android, iOS and Windows Phone. A single Office 365 license allows the user to install Word on five desktop and five mobile platforms.
Although Word does not have native support for Microsoft Works files, Microsoft Works 6-9 File Converter can convert Works files to a format that Word can open and edit. The application is available for free on Microsoft Download Center. As the Converter is only available for Windows, Mac OS X users must use an online service to convert Microsoft Works files. Zamzar is one of such websites and can convert Works files for free.
Although Microsoft designed Works as a cheaper alternative to Office, the tool became obsolete when free alternatives were released by other companies. As such, Microsoft discontinued the application in 2009.
