The Internet first began in 1969, according to Bright Knowledge. Scientists working for the U.S. Advance Research Project Agency connected computer networks at the University of California and the Stanford Research Institute.
When the Internet was first created, it was known as ARPANET. In 1971, Ray Tomlinson developed email. In 1979, the first connection across the Atlantic Ocean occurred when the University College London was connected. Other countries started to develop networks similar to ARPANET. The networks eventually became connected and the system was known as TCP/IP, which is still in use as of 2014. The first Internet Service Provider, or ISP, became publicly available in 1990. In 1991, the first web page was published.
