How Did the BlackBerry Get Its Name?

Research in Motion's marketing firm chose the name BlackBerry for the company's phone/email/Internet device because it was a pleasant-sounding word and the device, at the time, was only available in black. Canada.com reports that the marketing company avoided the word "e-mail," which it said raises many people's blood pressure.

Lexicon Branding, the California firm that named the device for Research in Motion, began looking into fruit-based names when someone noted that the device's keys resembled seeds, according to Canada.com. A Lexicon Branding representative said that when seeking attention for a product, it is better to create a new concept than to describe the item and noted that the Blackberry name accomplished that for Research in Motion.
