What Is a Deskjet Printer?

Deskjet is a brand name of inkjet printers manufactured by Hewlett-Packard. These printers range from small printers for the home to large industrial models. Many Deskjet printers are all-in-one models that print, scan and copy documents.

HP’s production of inkjet printers began with the Thinkjet introduced in 1984 and priced at $495. In 1988, HP introduced the first Deskjet at a price of $1,000. It printed two pages per minute in black and white at 300 dpi resolution. The current line of HP Deskjets includes many different printers and all-in-one models that print in color and in black and white. Over the years, these printers have gone down in price and up in functionality. As of 2014, an HP Deskjet 2540 all-in-one wireless printer with speeds of 20 ppm in black and 16 ppm in color, compatible with both Windows and Macintosh operating systems, costs about $80.
