Cricut Design Studio software connects certain Cricut hardware such as the Cricut Expression machine to a computer, allowing users to accurately cut paper, vinyl, leather and many other materials through a digital interface. The software also provides access to a database of ready-made images for cutting.
Cricut hardware owners that wish to use Cricut Design Studio to improve their material cutting projects can purchase and download the software from Software Informer. As of 2015, Cricut Design Studio costs $59.99 and operates exclusively on Windows operating systems. Both users and Cricut update Cricut Design Studio's online database of templates, patterns and images with new layouts; a share option allows users to create unique images and post them to the database for others.
The primary interface of Cricut Design Studio is a digital representation of the cutting surface. Users create and edit images on the on-screen cutting mat and then send the finished cutting instructions to their cutting hardware, much in the same way a printer works. Benefits of using this software include the ability to easily move, rotate, skew, weld and reorganize images on the digital cutting board. Cricut Design Studio was developed by Provo Craft & Novelty; it does not work with all Cricut cutting machines.
