Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger worked together to create Instagram. They began development in 2009, when they decided to repurpose another app, and made Instagram available to users in October of 2010.
Instagram's beginning was as a photo and memo-sharing app named Burbn, which was created by Kevin Systrom. Mike Krieger began working with Systrom on Burbn, making it a photo-sharing app only and renaming it Instagram. The app has a variety of filters, frames and effects that users can apply to their photos and share with their friends. In 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram for $1 billion in cash and stocks.
