To set up a virtual private network, use the Set Up A Virtual Private Network Connection, which is a built-in feature in Windows 7 and later versions. To set up a VPN connection, the IP address or the domain name of the server is required.
- Access the Set Up A Virtual Private Network Connection option
On computers running on Windows 7, click Start, and type in "vpn" in the search box. On computers running on Windows 8 and 8.1, point the mouse on the upper-right corner of the screen, and move it down. Select Search, and type "vpn" in the search box. Then, click on Set Up A Virtual Private Network Connection.
- Set up the VPN
When the Create A VPN Connection window appears, provide the IP address or the domain name of the server to which you want to connect. Select Don't Connect Now if you want to complete the setup process without connecting to the VPN right away. Click Next, input the username and password, and click Connect.
- Connect to the VPN
After setting up the VPN, click on the Windows network logo on the bottom-right corner of the task bar. Select the VPN connection, and click Connect. On the Connect VPN Connection window, click on Properties, go to the Security tab and select the exact type of VPN. Close the Properties window, and connect to the VPN by clicking Connect on the Connect VPN Connection window..
