To create a blog, first choose a free blogging software, such as WordPress, and create an account. After making an account, select a blog URL, which is often a variation of the blog's title.
For example, a blog named "Jane's First Blog" might have a URL such as janesfirstblog.wordpress.com. The URL is permanent, while you can edit the blog title later. At this step, choose a language for the blog, and select whether it is a private or a public blog. Now, log into the WordPress account, and use the WordPress dashboard to customize the blog.
Options available on the dashboard include themes or designs, adding authorized users who can edit the blog, putting a biography on the author profile and updating the blogroll or subscription list. The dashboard also lets users add extra pages to their blogs. These are ideal for adding an About page, contact information, a directory or a post archive.
After you choose a theme, you can update aspects of the theme for a custom appearance. For instance, you can change the theme's color, add cascading stylesheets, place custom images or include a background image. Alternately, users who are well-versed in HTML and CSS may create their own blog themes from scratch.
WordPress offers both a toolbar and an app, letting users update and manage blogs from elsewhere on the Web or from mobile devices.
