Microsoft's Educatornetwork.com's Common Core Implementation Kit is a tool that simplifies the creation of language, art and math lesson plans aligned to the Common Core State Standards from within Microsoft Word 2013. A link on the Common Core Implementation Kit webpage points to Store.office.com, where there is a download link for the free Office Lesson Planner app.
The Office Lesson Planner combines lesson plan templates and a task menu displaying subject matter-specific daily learning targets based on Common Core standards for mathematics and English. The tool's menu allows teachers to include instructional notes, "I Can" statements, vocabulary and ideas for activities and assessment in their plans. The app provides space for additional differentiation suggestions, a list of common student misconceptions, vocabulary lists, links to open educational resources and any personal notes teachers want to add.
Plan creation involves selection of appropriate standards and learning targets, which are then added to Microsoft Word template for the lesson. A teacher's own ideas, activities or resources can be included to complement the product's built-in resource library.
As of August 2015, the Office Lesson Planner only integrates with Microsoft Word 2013. It also requires a compatible browser to function properly. Development work to support earlier versions of Microsoft Word is underway.
