cPanel is a Unix-based program designed to give web hosts the ability to manage and update websites from within a browser. It is geared toward simplification and automation for less tech-savvy users. It is a three-tier control panel, offering utilities to administrators, owners and end users.
cPanel is capable of supporting all popular application and email formats. Initially released in early 1996, cPanel has undergone two major updates as of 2014. Implemented when there was little competition in the control-panel market, it quickly achieved dominance and has pushed out many other competitors, including several companies spun off of cPanel itself.
