What Is a Computer Visual Display Unit?

The term visual display unit, or VDU, is used to refer to any device that displays graphic images generated by a computer or any other electronic device. They typically resemble a television. Most people use the term visual display unit synonymously with "monitor," but VDU also refers to other types of displays.

Visual display units utilize tiny blocks of colored light known as pixels to display text and images. The resolution of a display is determined by its pixel density. A VDU can either be integrated into the electronic device or connected as a peripheral device. Projectors and flat panel displays are both good examples of video display units.
