The WildList Organization attempts to keep a list of all known viruses currently operational "in the wild." However, this does not take into account viruses that are not actively spreading or that have only been reported once.
WildList is a noncommercial project that seeks reports from users all over the world who, between them, use dozens of different antivirus software vendors. Anti-virus software providers and other digital security companies often have their own lists of currently active viruses available on their websites. These lists are often targeted toward the average user, with descriptions, screenshots, risk evaluation and instructions for removal using the security tools developed by that company. However, the lack of coordination among these lists, as well as the fast-paced nature of virus research and prevention, means that the same virus often exists under many different names depending on the particular list.
