Akai is a consumer electronics company most commonly known for its mini keyboards, keyboard pad controllers, DJ controllers and the DM13 microphone frequently used by harmonica players. Akai's original products focused on audio and visual electronics, with signature products that included audio cassette decks, audio recorders and sound amplifiers.
In the mid 80s, the company created a separate division, Akai Professional, that took over the production of musical instruments. This division is responsible for its more widely known keyboard products.
In the early 2000s, Akai expanded the company's electronic products to include home appliances. In addition to musical instruments, the brand is currently associated with heaters, air conditioners, microwaves and air filtration systems.
