Some of the channels available through Eutelsat's Hot Bird satellite system include Al Jazeera English, Canal + Discovery and Cartoon Network Italia. The satellites transmit digital radio and television signals over Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.
There are more than 1,000 channels available to anyone who has the equipment to receive the signal without any subscription. They are called clear channels, and the Italian Class Horse TV and Arabic Abu Dhabi Al Oula Europe are two examples on the Hot Bird satellite system.
Other channels include 3ABN International, which broadcasts in English; the Al Waad channel, which broadcasts in Arabic; Baby TV Europe, which broadcasts in French; and Crime Investigation UK, which broadcasts in English and Polish. Some channels, such as the Korean-language CGN TV, are in standard definition. Others, such as Canal + Film, a Polish channel, are in high definition.
More networks are making the switch to high definition. Switzerland's public radio and TV network in 2015 rolled out a high definition version of its information channel, SRF info. The channel is available on Swiss cable as well as unencrypted through the Hot Bird satellite network. SRF info was the final Swiss public radio and TV channel to have an HD version.
