According to a recent study of 2013-2014 mid-size cars and sport utility vehicles by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the Subaru Legacy and Outback scored the highest for accident avoidance technologies. However, the Cadillac ATS and SRX, Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Volvo S60 and XC60 were all highly rated.
The scoring system used gave a maximum of six points to each system. The cars were set on a course to crash going either 12 or 25 miles per hour. The Subarus each received six points while the rest of the superior class cars received five points. Five of the points correspond to how effectively the car automatically slowed down when on a crash course, and the final point was for a warning alarm. It's important to note, however, that some of these cars do not provide the accident avoidance technology as a standard feature.
