A user can unlock his phone from AT&T for free by accessing the Consumer Device Unlock section on ATT.com, entering required information and sending a request. If he meets the requirements, the user receives instructions regarding the unlocking procedure within two business days after submitting the request.
Before sending the instructions to the user, AT&T requires that the phone is intended solely for the use on the AT&T wireless network. Other general requirements include not using the phone for fraudulent activities, not having it active on another account and paying the early termination fees in full. For postpaid customers, AT&T requires that the phone account is active for more than 60 days with no unpaid balance.
