The quickest way to tell if the Internet connection is up and running is to try to log on to a trusted website. If a person is unable to connect to the Internet, this is a good indication that there may be a connectivity issue.
As frustrating as it is when a person is unable to get online, there are some easy troubleshooting tips he or she can try. Quite often, one of these fixes will be successful in getting back on the Internet.
- Check the cables An Internet outage may be as simple as a loose cable. Check the connections to the modem, router and even the connections coming from the wall.
- Check the network connection Be sure the computer's Wi-Fi is attempting to access the right network. For example, if it is trying to connect with a neighbor's network, there will be connectivity issues.
- Reboot Sometimes, all it takes is a simple reboot. Turn off the laptop, and unplug the router and modem. Wait a minute or so, plug everything back in and attempt to connect to the Internet again.
- Contact the provider If none of the simple troubleshooting tips worked, contact the Internet provider to see if there is an outage in the area. Sometimes, the representative can troubleshoot the system on the phone. If necessary, a technician can be sent to help fix the problem.
