Depending on users' privacy settings, strangers in online chat rooms may or may not be able to see personal details of other users. When users change their privacy setting to public, their profile becomes visible to any chat room user.
Most online chat rooms give users the liberty to either share or hide their personal details. For safety reasons, online chat rooms generally allow other users to only see members' chat room nicknames and sometimes a profile picture. An online chat room user's personal details are only made available to a stranger if the user decides to share it. Real names, home and school addresses, social security numbers, phone numbers and any other personal details should never be shared with a stranger.
