As of July 31, 2009, consumers can no longer obtain free coupons from the United States government to purchase a digital converter box. The coupons were offered by the government due to changing laws about over-the-air broadcasts, which required all broadcasts to switch to a digital-only format.
The boxes were necessary for older televisions sets that did not have a built-in digital tuner. The coupons were valid for a number of different digital converter boxes that were available at major retailers such as Best Buy, RadioShack, Kmart, Target and Wal-Mart. After the initial purchase of the converter box, there were no additional monthly fees.
