Reading a book on a computer requires software known as an e-book reader that translates the electronic version of the book into readable text and images. Different programs are required to read e-book file formats, though many e-book readers can interpret and render multiple file formats.
Popular e-book reader programs as of August 2015 include Free ePub Reader, the Amazon Kindle PC reader and Google Books Downloader. The latter two programs are intended primarily for use with e-books provided by their respective purchasing services. Some e-books are released in the Adobe Portable Document Format that can be read using the Adobe Reader program, as well as many Web browsers.
