Windows File Explorer is one program other than WinZip that is capable of extracting zip files, which are compressed folders that include one or more files within them. First, make sure File Explorer is set up to open zip files. Next, open the program up, find the zip folder and use the Extract All command.
- Make sure File Explorer is associated with zip files
Tap or click on the Home tab, then on Properties. Next, find the General tab and ensure it says "File Explorer" next to the "Opens with" text. If it does not, click on Change and then choose File Explorer.
- Open File Explorer
In Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, swipe up from the right edge of the screen, then tap Search. Next, enter File Explorer in the search box, and then tap or click on File Explorer once the option is available.
- Use the Extract All command
To extract everything in the zip folder, tap or click on the Compressed Folder Tools tab. Once the option appears, tap or click on the Extract All button.
- Open containing files
All files within the zipped folder are next automatically unzipped. These files can now be opened as normal.
