The National Fire Protection Association provides free online access to the current NEC codebook on its website at nfpa.org. The site organizes the NEC codebook into chapters corresponding to each NEC code number. Users can find individual links to each chapter on the NEC document information page.
In order to access and read any chapter of the codebook, users must first create a free personal account on the NFPA website. Contractors use the NEC codebook, also known as the National Electrical Code, as a guide to the safe installation of electrical wiring. Many individual states and cities have adopted the code, but it is not a federal law.
