The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers beginner-orientated courses at Scratch.MIT.edu. People looking for video-based tutorials can check out LearnScratch.org, which has videos for beginner, intermediate and advanced students.
The Scratch programming language is designed to give beginners an easy way to learn programming by manipulating images and other multimedia. Most programming languages require libraries for displaying images, which requires an intermediate understanding of the language. While Scratch is designed with beginners in mind, the game-creation tool Stencyl is based on it. Although Stencyl lacks 3D graphics capabilities, it has been used for professional-caliber retro games, many of which are available on desktop and mobile devices.
