As of 2010, users cannot download Microsoft Word 2007 for free or get a free trial version. A U.S. district court banned Microsoft from selling the product since it used another company's patent in the program without permission. Microsoft replaced Microsoft Word 2007 with Microsoft Office 2010 as an alternative.
As of 2015, consumers can get free trials of Microsoft Word through Microsoft’s Office 365 online product. This program includes a variety of Microsoft programs, including Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. The free trial enables users to install the service on computers, mobile phones and tablets -- up to five devices. During the trial, the consumers get about 1 terabyte of cloud storage per user at a maximum of five users.
