Blu-ray discs with 4K content are unavailable as of early 2015. However, the specifications for 4K Blu-ray discs are expected to be finalized in the first half of 2015 with production expected to follow shortly thereafter.
Content recorded in 4K resolution contains approximately four times the information of content recorded at the typical Blu-ray resolution of 1920 pixels wide by 1080 pixels high. This makes storing full movies on standard Blu-ray discs impossible. The upcoming 4K Blu-ray standard is anticipated to increase storage capacity to between 66 and 100 gigabytes and to use improved compression algorithms to enable the new generation of Blu-ray discs to store and play 4K content.
