BMP is an image file format that stores bitmap digital images and retains information for each pixel of the image. The typical size of a bitmap file is quite large due to the amount of information stored within it.
As of 2014, photographs taken using a digital camera or a standard image scan are usually saved as a BMP images by default. The BMP format allows for editing at the individual pixel level. Images stored in this format are also independent of any built-in display device linked to the computer's operating system. When BMP images are resized, there is typically a noticeable loss in graphic quality.
