To get a blue check on Twitter, an account must have its identity authenticated through a verification process. As of 2014, Twitter only provides verification to accounts that represent prominent individuals or brands from various industries, such as music, acting, fashion, government and media.
Once a Twitter account has been verified, a blue check badge appears next to its user name at both the profile page and the site's search results. As of 2014, accounts that have the badge appear on the background or part of the profile picture are generally falsely representing verification. The verified badge is not affected by the color of the account profile page theme.
