A Blu-ray player is a home entertainment device that plays Blu-ray video discs. Blu-ray discs are similar in appearance to DVDs, though they are able to be written with higher picture quality and feature 3D content. Most Blu-ray players can also play DVDs.
Sony began producing Blu-ray discs in the early 2000s, but the first designated Blu-ray players were not launched until 2006. The key difference between Blu-ray players and DVD players is that DVD players use a wide red laser, while Blu-ray players use a narrower red laser. This allows more information to be written onto and read from the disc.
